ELECTRICITY

Residents and commercial customers are serviced by two electrical power providers in the Saint John Community:

  • The Power Commission of the City of Saint John (Saint John Energy)
  • New Brunswick Power (NB Power)

Saint John Energy

The Power Commission of the City of Saint John (Saint John Energy) provides energy services to customers located within the boundaries of the City of Saint John.

New Brunswick Power

NB Power provides energy services for the surrounding municipalities of Grand Bay-Westfield, Quispamsis, Rothesay, and St. Martins.

NATURAL GAS

Enbridge Gas New Brunswick is the licenced distributer of natural gas in the Province of New Brunswick.

It currently distributes gas to over 10,000 institutional, commercial, industrial and residential customers in New Brunswick. Enbridge Gas New Brunswick currently provides service to nine communities, including Saint John.

It supplies gas to customers in both the McAllister and Spruce Lake Industrial Parks.

WATER & WASTEWATER

Water and waste water services in Saint John are provided by Saint John Water; a City of Saint John owned utility.

The Industrial Water Service is a public service that provides industry with water to carry out their processes. The service includes the supply of water, operation and maintenance of related infrastructure, administration of the service, and billing and collection of water volumes used.

The Wastewater Service is a public service that provides for the collection and treatment of wastewater for the community.  Wastewater is collected from residential and commercial sources within the system and is transported to wastewater treatment plants through an extensive network of collection pipes and pumping stations.

WASTE COLLECTION & RECYCLING

The Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission is responsible for solid waste disposal and diversion in the Greater Saint John area, including Crane Mountain Landfill and the recycling and compost programs. The Commission is a non-profit organization governed by representatives of the municipalities and local service districts, and it is funded solely through the various tipping fees at the landfill.

Clean Earth operates two plants which process the sludge that is removed from household septic tanks as well as waste from industrial sites, agricultural and aquaculture wastes. The two processing plants are located in Saint John and Fredericton. Clean Earth receives and dewaters the following wastes:

  • Residential, commercial and industrial septage (waste from septic tanks)
  • Grey water produced from industrial constructions projects
  • Fish waste including blood water, fish manure and process fish waste
  • Grease trap waste from commercial and institutional facilities
  • Some agricultural liquid wastes
