Transportation
Saint John is situated on Canada’s Atlantic seaboard on the southern coast of New Brunswick, 110 km, (68 miles), from the U.S. border at Calais, Maine. This strategic location provides ready access to major markets in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, and the northeastern United States.
The region’s efficient and reliable transportation networks include:
- the largest seaport in the province;
- modern highway infrastructure;
- rail lines serving the northeastern United States and Central Canada; and
- and an airport with links around the world.
Port of Saint John
The Port of Saint John is the largest seaport in the Province of New Brunswick.
It is located only 110 kilometers (68 miles) from the United States border. It is the closest Atlantic Canadian port to North American consumer markets and industrial centres.
Port terminals are located in close proximity to major highway systems, and are equipped with on-dock rail access with service from competitive lines.
The Port is well diversified with modern terminal infrastructure and equipment to handle all cargo types: containers, dry bulk, liquid bulk, and breakbulk.
With the capacity for growth and expansion, the port is a facilitator of trade and a key part of S aint John’s transportation infrastructure, providing a marine gateway to global markets.

Highway Infrastructure
The Government of New Brunswick is responsible for highway infrastructure in the province, including Route 1; which is New Brunswick’s highest volume commercial highway, and the gateway to the United States.
Investing into highway infrastructure projects that make access to markets safer and more efficient for residents and the business community has been an ongoing priority for the provincial government.
There are two major projects happening on the ground in Saint John today that will benefit businesses located in the Saint John Region.
#1 One Mile House Interchange
The One Mile House Interchange is a project that will improve the flow of traffic to and from the major industrial areas in East Saint John including the McAllister and Grandview Industrial Parks.
The project includes a 600 metre structure and associated ramps and roadways that will connect the Route 1 Highway to Bayside Drive, and across the CN rail yard, Marsh Creek and Rothesay Avenue.
The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2012.
# 2 Route 1 Gateway Project
The Route 1 Gateway Project focuses on the corridor that carries traffic from the St. Stephen, New Brunswick/Calais, Maine International border to the Trans-Canada Highway in River Glade.
The work of this project will improve traffic flow on this busy highway and make Route 1 safer and more efficient.
The Route 1 Gateway Project will include constructing 55 kilometers of new four-lane highway to complete Route 1 as a four-lane highway with construction work beginning in 2010 with an anticipated completion date of July, 2013.
